Jean Prouve – French Furniture Designer and Architect
Jean Prouve 1901 – 1984
Jean Prouve came from an artistic family, his grandfather and Victor, Jean’s father designed with Emile Galle and Louis Majorelle ceramics and Marquetry.
He trained initially as a blacksmith from 1917 to 1920, then studied at the Ecole Superieure de Nancy.
Only a year after opening his own workshop in 1923 he was producing modern designed steel chairs.
He was a founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes. He worked for Le Corbusier during the late 1920’s.
In 1931, Les Ateliers Jean Prouve was setup, this was a furniture manufacturing company. He became tired of this and after 1950, he left designing furniture to persue architecture.
