Blue Kitchen Makeover

White and Blue Kitchen Makeover

Blue and white is a popular color combination for kitchens

Interior design and decorating creates major changes in people’s lives. Kitchens are a space where we spend a great deal of time, so making them work efficiently and look aesthetically pleasing makes the “chore” of cooking and washing up afterwards seem enjoyable. This white and blue kitchen makeover is a good example of using an existing space to full capacity.

The Design Makeover Brief:

This kitchen was original 1970’s solid timber cabinetry with a painted finish. The benches were shallow and modern appliances like the dishwasher did not fit under it neatly.

The layout of the kitchen worked, it was simply outdated. It needed to have easy clean surfaces, lots of storage and more lighting. A breakfast area for the children was also a special request and that the kitchen be blue.

Design Method:

New stainless steel appliances were selected, the layout confirmed and the finishes selected. A simple speckled white laminate bench top with a timber front edge, a soft french blue prefinished board for the cabinetry, frosted glass for the overhead cupboard fronts and an artificial plank form of timber flooring.

The existing timber blinds could remain, white ceramic tiles were used for ease of cleaning on the walls and the remainder of the walls and ceiling were painted white.

Halogen lighting was used to give the kitchen lots of sparkle, and a small halogen pendant was used to define the breakfast bar.
The existing kitchen layout worked well but it was outdated.

Design Conclusion:

The space was transformed!
Everything now had a home, the microwave lived in the wall cabinetry and created more bench space. The dish drawers (dishwasher) fit snugly into the new purpose built cabinetry, a new stainless steel sink and chrome sink mixer make washing up a dream.
The old range was removed and a separate underbench electric oven and gas cook top have made cooking so much faster and the appliances are much easier to clean.
The blue cabinetry looks stunning against the timber floor, and the kitchen has a serene calmness about it, until the family moves in at meal times.
Blue and white has been an all time favourite combination in kitchens for as long as I can remember, and this example shows that it definitely works.

Overall a stunning makeover, achieved by simple planning and careful product and color selection.
