Color Terms

Hue – is what we call the color or it's name, i.e. yellow or red, it is the distinctive wavelength of the specific color.

Tint – This describes the range from a pure hue to white, it is Color with white added.

Shade – This shows the range from a pure hue to black, it is Color with black added.

Getting out a paint pallette is a good way to learn about color. Start with a hue for example red and start adding white to it, place a stroke on a piece of paper after each mix, you will end up with a progression of the color red, getting lighter until it is a very pale pink and eventually white. This is how a tint works, now try from red adding black to it, stroke by stroke your red gets darker and darker until it is not recognisable as red, it is black. This is how you find the shade of a color.

Tint, shade, hue

You can experiment further by mixing red, yellow and blue together. What color do you get? The answer is neutral gray.

You can start looking at combining colors, using tints and shades to alter the value of a color, and see how they then interact.

How to Use Color

If you don't know where to start with using color for interior decorating, then it is best to learn about the color wheel and how to use it. There you can break color down and find out which colors work well together, you can also learn the different types of color schemes that you can use to combine those colors in your home.

This will make you look at fabrics in a different way, to see how the fabric designers has combined the colors and the proportions to create colored designs. The same for wallpapers, tiles and other patterned and textured products. You will often combine the colors instinctivly but not understand why you have done so, by having a background knowledge in the color wheel you will then be able to expand on your current color ideas.
