Marcel Breuer Cesca Chair

Cesca Chair – Marcel Breuer

Modern Designer Furniture Profile

Marcel Breuer’s Cesca Chair was named after his daughter Cheska.

It was not the first tubular steel cantilevered chair but it is the most well known.

Breuer furthered his experimentation of tubular steel with this chair and believed that old furniture materials could be combined with the new to create a piece that was aesthetically pleasing.

Cesca Chair - Marcel Breuer
The frame – sled base and back support was all formed from a single piece of tubing. The seat and back were constructed of bent timber frames that were filled with natural caning and fixed to the metal tubular frame with screws. This ensured that the seated person was in contact with warm materials not the coolness of the metal.

The cantilever principle created a new form of chair and therefore Breuer’s Cesca Chair will be remembered as an influential part of modern furniture history.
