Indoor Outdoor Makeover

Indoor Outdoor Living Area Makeover

Need another room in your house? Try using your outdoor living area.

While decorating inside the owners of this house decided to create another living space, outdoors, and why not no new roof required, it has to be cheaper than adding on a new room.

The Design Brief:

The outside was accessible from a single door and it had a path around the house. The remainder was covered in grass, ok in summer, but muddy in winter. They wanted to be able to use the space all year round for family dining and entertaining.

Action:

Remove posts supporting the eaves, lift concrete paths and some grass.
Install timber bifolding doors into the living room wall, opening out the living space completely into the outdoor garden space. Find new outdoor furniture suitable for a large group to sit around.

This original space had a lot of potential.

Clever use of fixed timber seating defines the outdoor space and creates an excellent place to sit or lie down and enjoy the sun.

Design Conclusion:

The space was opened up and a huge new entertaining area was created. Removing the posts meant the house looked bigger. The bifolding doors opened up the entire living space enabling a large group to entertain inside and out.

The timber table and chair set seats eight people, and a large umbrella centralizes the eating space. Clever use of fixed timber seating defines the outdoor space and creates an excellent place to sit or lie down and enjoy the sun.

The existing grass softens the new colored concrete paved area creating individual spaces, grass for playing and paving for entertaining.

A fun new use of outdoor space that can be utilised all year round.
