Bedroom Makeover

Combining Contemporary Apartment Architecture with Traditional Interior Decorating

The art of interior design and decorating can make an existing space seem almost unrecognizable. This contemporary apartment was painted white throughout with charcoal sisal wool carpet and slim line blinds.

The Design Brief:

The client wanted to create an evening haven in which to read then sleep, as well as house his great collection of artwork.

The existing blinds allowed the exterior street light to filter into the room, these were a deterrent to getting to sleep and allowed the morning sunlight in, waking the client too early.

It is a bachelor's apartment so he wanted "nothing too frilly!"

The Plan of Attack:

  • A neutral color was required for the walls as the room was very small.
  • Bedside tables for holding books and lights were needed.
  • Select a masculine theme to combine the existing antiques and artwork.
  • New bedcover.
  • A pelmet and full curtains with blackout lining would solve the light problem.
  • Provide lamps for reading and creating softer light.
  • Make sure there was ample space to add as much artwork as possible.

Design Conclusion:

A very decorative framed piece became the focal point of the bedroom. With existing spotlighting in place it is definately the first thing in the room that catches your attention.A soft natural linen color was selected to paint the walls.

This meant the room still looked open and airy even though it was a small space.

It enhanced the color of the timber furniture, and was an excellent background for the artwork.

Timber side tables with drawers were selected to match the bed.

These provided storage for reading material and a place for the bedside lamps to sit. They also created a more balanced feel to the space.

The best way to block out the light was to use a fabric covered pelmet so light could not escape from the top of the curtain track, and full drapes with black out linings.

A cream nubbly silk was selected to create some texture and provides a luxurious sheen to the room.

The artwork was grouped to form "one picture" on both sides of the room. Trying to place as much as possible in the space without it looking overcrowded.

A very decorative framed piece became the focal point of the bedroom, and with existing spotlighting already in place, it definitely is the first thing that catches your attention.

The Toile de Jouy Bedcover adds some movement and creates some fun in the room, being white, it makes the bed look large but doesn't enclose the space.

Overall a stylish makeover, suitable for any bachelor to live in.

This was achieved by thinking of the room as a whole and "layering" the new into it, with careful product and color selection, combined with fantastic furniture and artwork.
