Q. Is wallpaper in these days? I'm afraid it may be dated, is that true? From: Joanne

A. I don't believe that wallpaper ever dates. It depends entirely on the Pattern and situation. Wallpapers can be traditional modern or neutral. In fact there are some that were developed to look like paint but had a very uniform finish. Check out your decorating stores and have a look at what's available, Im sure that you will be very surprised. Incidentally we still specify wallpapers and vinyl wall coverings very regularly. Other options are to just paint the wall but use a paper frieze or dado to add the detail to the room. Hope this helps

Q
. I am trying to lift existing cork tiling from my kitchen, which has been glued down for 10 years. Is there any advice you can give me to help me lift this, very difficult to lift the tiles. Managed to lift a few tiles off the rest can't stay on the floor as they will be putting new floor on this afternoon. Urgent please. From: Robert

A. Hi you've got a difficult one here as they are probably glued down with latex. There is no real solution apart from getting a spade under them but you will also need to get the glue off and that is usually sanded and ground off. The only other solution is to replace the tiles you have lifted and go over the top of the existing floor. Depending what the new floor is this may or may not work. I suggest you postpone the laying of the new floor with a phone call and remove the tiles and glue properly. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Q
. I am re-carpeting the whole with cut pile 100% wool carpet. We are getting 2 opposing views on which underlay to use. Should it be rubber or foam? The carpet will be extra heavy duty and of good quality. We want this flooring to last some time. Please advise us.From: Sheila, New Zealand

A. In my opinion, rubber waffle underlay is the better option. It feels better under foot, it provides strength and durability and firm support for the carpet, it allows air to circulate between the floor and the underlay/carpet (allowing any moisture to be able to dry out). There are different grades of foam available, some better than others, the cheap ones will not hold their shape and will do nothing to protect your carpet, more expensive, denser heavier quality will improve the feel underfoot and help extend the life of your carpet. As you are going to be spending a lot of money on a good quality carpet that you are wanting to enjoy for a long time, I suggest you have the best underlay you can and as I said earlier in my opinion it is the rubber waffle. I hope that this has been of some help. For further information, you could contact the carpet manufacturers and ask what they suggest you use with their product. Good luck with your project. I hope I have been of some use. Thanks for visiting our site, feel free to visit again as we are constantly adding new articles that may be of interest.Related articles: Underlay
