Your Home Decoration Questions Answered
Q.
I have recently moved house & need to redecorate an attic conversion. It
is a games room and I wondered where is best to get decorating ideas etc? From: Jayne, West Midlands, US
A. We have a section on Attic / Loft conversions coming
up in a month or so but that will probably be a little to late for you. Look
in our book section and possibly in storage to get an idea what to do with
the room. What do you want to make the attic/ games room into? Let me know
and I'll see if I can be more specific. Hope that this helps? Try this page Lofts
Q. I am decorating a small master bedroom, we are
getting antique white furniture and plan on painting
the walls in a lavender scheme. I am clueless as
to where to start. I am going for a romantic feeling.
From: Karyn
A. It sounds great! The main thing
to think about is that it will be lived in. You
want it to be soft, flowing and romantic but still
practical. Layered drapery, sheers and more sheers
at the windows, held back with decorative holdbacks.
Is your furniture guilded? You could pick a metal
finish ie gold or silver - silver works better with
lavender, and use that with your accessories, silver
curtain rods and hold backs, silver picture frames,
lots of little decorative ones, silver hearts or
wavy lines, stripes or flowers on the sheers (depends
on the look ie feminine, soft, modern, natural.
Warm fluffy rugs in muted tones on the floor providing
lots of texture and a comfort underfoot. A bedspread
usually looks better as it drapes and flows over
the bed, select a fabric that ties in with the drapery,
either in colour, texture or design. Throw rugs
in mohair add warmth to the room and more texture,
as well as being great to snuggle up to and lightweight
when it is cold at night. Pillows, lots of pillows,
and cushions all shapes sizes and colours (within
your lavender range of course). Side lamps for atmosphere
and reading and mood setting, perhaps in the silver
or to match the bed or new furniture, with decorative
shades, perhaps with a beaded bottom fringe to add
a bit of novelty to the space. Do not allow the
TV to live here, or hide it, bedrooms are supposed
to be calm spaces for unwinding and sleeping. And
last but not least - candles, dot a few around,
make sure that they are large and solid and not
easily knocked over, keep them away from the sheers
and bedding, we don't want any fires in this bedroom!
Fresh flowers always make a difference too! Treat
yourself. I hope this helps. We would love to see
photos of the finished product!
