Q. I have a 9 x 12 room. My son moved out, now I want to make it my computer room. I did the top half in yellow rag rolling, the bottom is white for now. I am thinking dark blue or something in burgundy. I just need some advice, I am at an age where I can't make decisions - I JUST WANT IT DONE! I appreciate any advice. From: name not given

A. If you can send a picture, that will help us to help you, however in my opinion I would start with a contrasting darker colour and probably in the blues. Without seeing the room and the effect already in place, I'm guessing, however check out our colour schemes section in yellows and blues and that should get you going in the right direction. Blues are a pretty contrast to yellows and at the lower level will create a dish effect. This will work well if the top height of the lower colour is at the desk height. Another idea may be to add a dado line in the form of a chair rail. Paint that or finish it in the same trim as the skirting cornice or architrave. This will protect the wall in an office environment and also help define neatly the top and bottom colours. Hope that this helps.

Q.
I live in a relatively old apartment and some things are still 1970's-style. The kitchen cabinets are brown and the tiles are beige; it's horrible, but I can't afford to buy a whole new kitchen. Is there any color I can paint the kitchen cabinets that will look OK with the beige tiles? And what color do I put on the floor? Thanks,
From: Kate, Netherlands

A. White works miracles in kitchens! It will freshen up the space, make it look larger, cleaner and new! Be certain to check that the white has a slight yellow/brown tint and not blue or red as this would not work with the beige tiles. As for the floor, I don't know what you have now but, a pale timber, warm cork, light coloured vinyl to create an open look, or to ground the scheme a dark floor, dark timber (I think you are trying to get away from that though), marmoleum / linoleum (a marbled look that can introduce some colour and is warm underfoot).
