A few tips on bureaucracy - or how to avoid tangles with the bureaucrats.

Whoever makes the rules - always wins. So if you are trying to cut corners with your building permits - think twice, as you may end up doing the job twice.
Find out before you start your planning what you are permitted to do, this saves you time and puts you in the good books for later if you have to go back with queries.
Unfortunately the scale of the project makes no difference, the rules are there for all projects, this can be very frustrating when it comes to putting in toilets, bathrooms, and accessible doorways and stairs. The cost is large for those thought to be simple little jobs!
Keep your mouth shut! We all have opinions on why rules and regulations shouldn't be there, but unless you can get into government, you are not going to change them so save your energy, and find something nice to say to the bureaucrat behind the counter!
We are trying to save trees, but unfortunately with bureaucracy comes plans and documentation in triplicate (or more). So be prepared, and make sure you always keep copies yourself and keep a copy on your building site for when they come to visit! Then hope that they have a good recycling system when they are finished.
