Dezine Definition - Screws

Screws have threaded shafts and therefore have a greater holding power than nails. Screws are mechanically fixed while nails rely on friction. The more threads there are, the greater their gripping strength. For more information click here.

Dezine Tip

If you don't have a big budget, don't worry, you don't have to buy every thing new. Try looking for things at garage sales, second hand stores, junk yards, you will be very surprised what people throw away. It could be just what you are looking for, a worn leather chair, lamp bases that just need new shades, pictures that you could reuse the frames from, decorative bowls and vases, even old drapes that you can use the fabric to make cushions. So have a little scout around before you start shelling out your hard earned cash!

Your Questions Answered

Q. We have a 1930's Tudor style home in a historic district that has lots of windows on the main floor but not much light. The windows, their casements and room moldings appear to be walnut, an unattractive wood to me. We're thinking of painting them white. We need suggestions of ways to either work with the walnut or to treat them and then paint them. What do you suggest? Amber, USA

A. The actual size of the window is not going to change if you paint them white, but they will appear bigger. If you want more light, then I suggest that you add more lights to your rooms. Homes in this era, do not have adequate lighting for today's activities. They often only had one pendant in the middle of the room. Try using freestanding lamps or table lamps in the corners, these will make the room appear larger and you won't have to employ an electrician. If this is not an option, then adding some more fixed lights to the room is your best option. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but the most successful solution I think.
