A few tips on shopping for furniture
- Don't buy the first thing you see, there are a lot of choices available.
- Do your homework first. Look on the internet, magazines, brochures, local advertising to see what style you think will suit your home.
- When you have found the look, then go and try out the furniture. Sit in the armchair, lie on the sofa, set yourself up at the dining table, try reaching accross, imagining what you will put on there and make sure you have enough room. Tables look large when they have a clear top, start putting place settings on and you may have no room left for food, so think about how you will use the table.
- Size is a major factor. Measure what you currently have and use that as a base to see what will fit, either you want to go larger to accommodate more people or smaller to make more space in the room. You can find styles of sofas that look small ( a streamlined minimilistic frame), but can fit the same amount of people as a larger usually rounded plump and padded comfortable looking style. It all depends on what your goals are, but having somewhere to start saves a lot of guess work.
- Make sure you don't purchase something that you have seen in a magazine and just have to have! Often it will not suit your home and we all know about impulse buying! You need to ensure that what you select is in keeping with the rest of your decor, unless of course you want to redecorate and your new purchase is your starting point, then go for it!
- Think of how you use your home, do you have children, pets, entertain frequently? Select fabrics and finishes for your furniture accordingly. Leather or vinyl are great for sofas if you have pets and children, spills wipe off and hair doesn't accumulate on the furniture. Timber can withstand more bangs and crashes than painted lacquered furniture, and solid floors (timber, tile, stone) are great if you entertain a lot. You don't want to be on your hands and knees cleaning up red wine stains from your carpet every time you have guests.
- Obviously I could go on and on, but the most important thing to think about is, do you like it, and you like it in 5 years time? Is it a "Fad" or are you buying it to last - the cost will effect these decisions. Make sure you love what you buy as you will be seeing it everyday and enjoy the shopping experience.
