In March we featured Window Treatments . We have had numerous requests for "how to" information when it comes to making your own designer shades and blinds and curtains. The internet is full of bits and pieces on this subject.

We unfortunately haven't got the expertise in the practical area to provide you with step by step instructions, but once again we have researched and solved a problem for those of you who want to make your own roman shades and valances. We are still looking for the complete package but what we have so far is excellent.

How to Sew Roman Shades, by Jennifer Thoden Click here

We believe is the best ebook available on this topic. Great, easy to use examples and diagrams, Jennifer gives you the confidence to attempt unthought of designs to enhance any room of your home. Just find the fabric. Jennifer tells you how to calculate how much you need and what accessories are required, and provides a step by step guide from prepairing the fabric to installing the shade, the only thing Jennifer doesn't do is sew it for you! The Perfect Paint Job

  • Surface preparation is vital, and can make or break a paint job. Ensure you fill any holes and t ake off any old flaky paint , and then sand back to form a smooth finish. The "she'll be right, the paint will fill in the holes" theory is totally incorrect! Always check the surface before starting to paint with a light to see if there are any blemishes.
  • Make sure the surface you are going to paint is clean!! This is essential, especially in kitchen areas where the walls can have oily residue from cooking. Use sugar soap for cleaning.
  • Remove all fittings that you can, ie door handles, light fixtures, and use painter's masking tape around any that cannot be removed ie door hinges, light switches, glass in windows. A sloppy paint job is obvious when you see paint all over the light switch!
