Dezine Definition - Nickel Plating and Plywood

Nickel Plating: An electroplating process which was perfected in the 1860’s, it was the most popular choice for finishing metals in the early twentieth century until it was replaced by Chromium Plating in the mid 1920’s. Nickel had a gray tinge and was prone to tarnishing, the chromium was very shiny and had a greater colour retention.

Plywood: Plywood is made up of thin layers or plies of timber that get bonded together. Layers are laid face to face but each adjacent layer the grain runs in the opposite direction, which provides strength to the board making it stiffer and stronger than solid timber of the same thickness.

Dezine Tip

Spring Cleaning

A necessary job. To make it easier, itemize all your tasks and put them into achievable time frames. For example, today I will clean out the pantry, tomorrow I will clear out the bathroom cupboards. Don't get side tracked and start pulling out the pots and pans and cleaning the cutlery. Just attack one job and complete it. If you do one item on your list every day, before you know it the dreaded spring cleaning will be over. Another tip...don't just relocate your clearing out of unnecessary items to the garage. Make a decision, give them to someone who needs them, sell them in a yard sale, or donate them to your local church or charity but get them out of the house. A good rule of thumb is if you haven't used it for a year, then get rid of it!

Your Questions Answered

Q. What is the best shaped table for a dining room? Greg, Queensland, Australia

A. This is a personal preference question, but a round table allows for better conversation, a square or rectangular appears more formal and tends to suit symmetrical rooms.
