Types of Decorative Finishes
Embroidery
A delicate needlecraft, embroidery adds detail to table linen, bed linen, cushion covers and fine curtains.
There are numerous different stitches that can be combined to decorate edges, provide motifs to corners and create centrepieces on table linen.
Cutwork Embroidery
Is a very intricate and delicate form of embroidery.
It is embroidery with cutwork detail.
It involves solidly stitching close blanket stitch then cutting away inner sections.
It is especially suited to table and bed linen and looks extremely smart with white on white.

Machine embroidery, looks good but you can't beat the hand sewn embroidery for detail.

Applique, the arched cat motif has been stitched onto the patchwork quilt.

Quilting |
Applique
This is applying one piece of fabric to another larger piece.
The motif may be a single piece of fabric or numerous pieces forming a design when stitched down.
The stitching is worked around the edges of the motif.
Crewelwork
A cotton fabric decorated in cream or multicoloured embroidery, often wool.
Quilting
Polyester wadding is sandwiched between two layers of fabric and a quilted pattern is machine stitched through all the layers. |
Cross Stitch
Is a simple technique that provides decorative effects from complex borders to simple motifs and edgings. It involves working one stitch over the other as a diagonal cross, which fills a tiny square; the stitches build into lines and blocks of colour.
Patchwork
This consists of small pieces of fabric being pieced together - usually of the same size and shape and different fabrics.
