WC - Cistern

Most cisterns are made from plastic or china although some of the older types or old-fashioned models designed for heritage type buildings are made from metal and copper in particular.

Although they all do the same job, there are different types and generally they differ for economic or aesthetic reasons.

The Exposed Cistern - is the type that is fixed directly to the wall above the pan. It is a very common system.

The Close-Coupled Cistern - fits directly to the pan. It has no flush pipe and looks very compact and neat.

A Linked Cistern - is connected to the pan with the normal flush pipe system but the pipe is concealed under a shroud.

There are also Low-Level Cisterns and Mid Level Cisterns, which have similar flushing properties but different aesthetic looks.

The mid level is slowly being phased out, as the low level system is generally more compact and less obtrusive.

The designs have changed over the years as technology has made the flushing systems more efficient.
