Interior Design Fittings and Fixtures - Plumbing and Sanitary Fixtures

Kitchen Sink

We are all familiar with the kitchen sink, however as with all the fittings previously mentioned there are various types and features that need to be taken into consideration when specifying the fitting or designing the kitchen.

Firstly we need to consider what the sink is going to be used for. While that may seem obvious, different people have different requirements.

Consider if the kitchen is for a large family or perhaps a retired couple. Is there to be a lot of entertaining or simply day-to-day living. Remember form follows function unless the user is expecting compromise.

Sinks come in many of the materials already mentioned and then some, such as concrete, "Corian" and glass but for the most part stainless steel seems to be very common and the most practical as it is very robust, won't chip or rust and can be made to any size that you or the recipient requires.

A large sink is great but an added feature is an extendable spout so you can reach almost anything to clean.

The stainless steel sink often can be formed as one unit with additional sinks and drip tray. This is also applicable to other formed units in plastics and china however there is little that beats the all round versatility and economy of stainless steel.

Double sinks, the small central sink is for the waste disposal.

The sink may also have to contain, for washing up, larger items such as roasting pans. When confirming the size of the sink an obvious checklist would be the items to go in the sink and the largest of these items would usually be no larger than the interior of the oven (the only exception being large stock pots).

Then there are the fittings that are going to go on and around the sink. You need to confirm the types of taps and spout or faucet, if there is to be a vegetable spray, water filter system, instant boiling water unit, the type of plug (i.e. is it integral or separate). And last but not least the garbage or waste disposal unit.
