Definitions of Materials, Fabrics and Textiles used for Home Interior Decoration

Light, sheer or open weave. Sometimes printed or dyed in light colors

Double cloth with quilted or puckered surface patterning

Name: Microsuede

Synthetic

Twill or Pile

Synthetic suede look, wears well as upholstery.

Plain

Goat hair, (often mixed with cotton or wool). Sturdy and durable. May have a woven pattern.

Name: Moiré

Silk, Synthetic

A finish given cotton, silk, acetate, rayon, nylon etc where bright and dim effects are observed. This is achieved by passing the fabric between engraved rollers which press the particular motif in place. Watered textural effect.

Lightweight utility cloth. Economical, often used as under layer for upholstery cover.

A smooth transparent high textured type of voile fabric. Usually made from 100% polyester.

Sheer – very thin
Very light and thin, transparent, stiff and wiry cotton. It will withstand repeated laundering and still remtain its crispness. A true durable finish cloth.Varied colours, also prints. Primary use in curtains and drapery.

Strong and durable course cotton weave. Often used in its natural colour but also dyed or printed.

Wild silk with irregular texture. Also imitated in cotton and synthetics. Subject to shrinkage.
