Definitions of Types of Interior Fabrics and Textiles for use in Home Decorating

Listed below are properties and uses that individual textiles have.

Firm, glossy jacquard-patterned fabric. Damask is similar to brocade, but flatter and reversible. It can be made from linen, cotton, rayon or silk, or a combination of fibers.

Inexpensive cotton utility fabric. May have small woven pattern.

Plain weave (flat rib) with filling yarns heavier than warp.

Glass fibres made into yarn and woven in various weights. Fireproof. Poor abrasion-resistance.

Name: Gingham

Woven from dyed yarns, often in stripes, checks and plaids. Sturdy and launders well

Name: Homespun

Coarse yarns in textured weave suggesting hand weaving

Heavy, coarse, open weave. Durable and economical.

Name: Jaspe Cloth

Sturdy fabric with woven textural striped effect in muted colours

Name: Leather

Animal hide
Weave / Construction:
Non textile
Weight:
Light -Medium
Animal hide finished (and often dyed) for use as upholstery cover, tabletop surface, and so on. Corrective grain – the hide has been buffed down and doesn’t move with the room temperature. Full grain – Moves and breathes, it has no coating, it gets softer as worn more, more expensive by one third.

Any fabric woven of linen (flax) fibre. Typically smooth, hard surface. Rapid moisture absorbtion, no fuzziness, it does not soil quickly and has a natural luster and stiffness. Commonly used for tablecloths& napkins.
