Nave:
the part of a church westward of the choir that the general congregation assembles
Neck:
The plain part at the bottom of a Roman Doric or other capital between the mouldings and at the top of the shaft.
Needlepoint:
Hand embroidered over canvas or net. Also simulated with jacquard weave.
Needle Punch:
(carpet) This is a carpet without a pile. It is constructed by needle punching and entangling a fibre mixture through the backing fabric. The backing is then covered in an acrylic resin to hold it all in place. Fibres used, nylon, jute, and polypropylene. New methods of manufacture are always evolving - such as a welding method, fusing the back and eliminating the need for a resin adhesive.
Negative Stencil:
The paint is passed through the voids that surround the design.
Neoclassical:
A form of design that harks back to the elements of classical architecture such as Greek or Roman.
Neoprene:
An oil resistant synthetic rubber.
Net:
(fabric) Very open (lace) construction. Provides see-through drapery appearance – many patterns available.

Hues that have been neutralized by adding their compliments. The addition of black and white expands the neutral palette. Newell: the central column round which the steps of a circular staircase wind. Niche: a recess in a wall for a statue or ornament. |

An electroplating process which was perfected in the 1860’s, it was the most popular choice for finishing metals in the early twentieth century until it was replaced by Chromium Plating in the mid 1920’s. Nickel had a grey tinge and was prone to tarnishing, the chromium was very shiny and had a greater colour retention. Ninon: A smooth transparent high textured type of voile fabric. Usually made from 100% polyester. Nosing: the leading or prominent edge of a moulding or drip. It may be the edge of a step or the edge of a table or bench. E.g. a bull nosing.
