Architectural Design and Decorating Term Glossary - H

Hand (of doors):

refers to the side to which the door opens. This is important when ordering locks or certain types of hinges. It is different between the USA and Great Britain. In Britain a door is said to be left hand hung if the hinges are on the left-hand side as the door is opened towards him.

Handed:

A description of building parts that match each other as an object matches the image in a mirror. Handed objects form a pair. E.g. door handles.

Hardboard:

Hardboard is made from soft wood pulp and is a cheap product. Generally used as a base for other flooring. It can be painted and sealed but it is not very durable long term.

Hardwoods:

These trees are porous, and usually deciduous. They have broad leaves and covered seeds.

Heading:

The top of a curtain or drape. There are numerous types, ranging from simple gathers to elaborate French pleats and swags.

Heading Tape:

A simple and effective tape that is sewn to the heading of a curtain or drape, it comes in a wide variety of styles, and by drawing the cords together in them, it automatically creates the design, style or gathers.

Heartwood
:

This is the fully developed mature section in the centre of the tree. Due to the gum or resin contained in the wood cells it is usually darker in colour than sapwood. Its main function is to support the tree as it is inactive (ceased growing).

Heat Resistant Paints:

Oil –Modified Alkyd Paints are suitable for application to surfaces on which their temperatures could reach 100°C. Light paint colours could discolour at this temperature though. There are other forms of paint that canwithstand higher temperatures; all these paints generally contain Aluminium powder.

Hem:

The border or cut edge of cloth that is usually turned under and sown in place.


Hemp:

(textiles) A plant fibre, is naturally mould and rot resistant. It is very strong and has good shape retention. Over time it softens and develops a rich silky patina. It has excellent thermal properties and can filter up to 95% of UV light.

Herringbone:

A decorative pattern of angled lines that alternate the angle to the opposite at regular and symmetrical intervals. Similar to a wave but the angles are defined and the lines straight.

Herringbone Stitch:

A hemming stitch that is suitable for curtains and is used over ant raw edge that is then covered by another fabric.

Hessian:

(wallcovering) Closely woven Hessian (Hemp or Jute) is stuck to a heavy paper backing.

Highboy:

A tall chest of drawers set on top of a lowboy or commode. It was usually set on cabriole legs with a broken arch pediment. Made in North America during the 18th century.

Holdbacks:

(drapery) A decorative rigid form of tie back, these are usually made of metal, brass or iron, and can have many different decorative fittings to the ends. They often match the curtain rod ends. They are attached to the wall at the side of the curtains. The curtain fabric is basically drawn back and placed behind the hold back to keep it in place. It appears to be more formal than most forms of tiebacks.

Holland Linen:

A hardwearing fade resistant fabric stiffened with oil or shellac (varnish).

Homespun:

(fabric) Coarse yarns in textured weave suggesting hand weaving.

End of a table or chair leg that is shaped as a goats hoof. Early 18th Century and some Queen Anne furniture.

Hopsacking:

(fabric) Heavy, coarse, open weave. Durable and economical.

Horsehair:

A strong, smooth cloth is made from this fibre. It has had a significant use in traditional design upholstery.

Hue:

is the name of a colour, i.e. blue or green, it is the distinctive wavelength of a colour.
