Over 350 Color Designers from around the world gathered in Rancho Mirage, California in November at the Color Marketing Group (CMG) 2004 Fall International Conference to determine the colors that will be seen in the market place in 2005.

Founded in 1962 and based in Alexandria, Virginia, CMG is an international, not-for-profit Association of 1,500 Color Designers, professionals who enhance the function, salability and/or quality of a product through their knowledge and appropriate application of color.

CMG members forecast Color Directions one to three years in advance for all industries, manufactured products and services. They assess lifestyle changes that are emerging and affecting choices in products, trends and colors.

Here is the forecast for 2005

As we move into 2005, colors become both soothing and rejuvenating. They support the move toward spirituality while the warm tones of red, yellow and oranges are spicier with ethnic influences. Colors are livelier and more luxurious across the board reflecting an increasing optimism in society. The muddiness of past palettes is disappearing.

Blue goes deeper taking on the jewel quality of lapis and sapphire. Sage green becomes bluer, with yellow greens gaining more popularity. Green is here to stay. Teal becomes more prevalent.

Mineral and jewel tones gain importance.

Neutrals (always with us) are becoming richer, more vibrant, browns like melted chocolate, coffee latte, cream and complex gray with undertones that resonate with other colors in the space. Natural neutrals will be used with bright accents, lime green, fuchsia pink, deep burgundy.

Much bluer reds make an appearance in a rich jewel tone burgundy.

Metallics are softer. Silvers are tinted with blue and green undertones. Gold is deeper, almost bronze.

Purples come more to the forefront in unexpected combinations…red and lavender, purple and copper, aubergine and aged gold.

In fashion, orange, pink and turquoise are the new basic blacks.

There is a movement toward personalization of color as increasingly people desire unique colors in their home. Intensely personal color blending by design professionals will become the luxury of the wealthy.

White on white on white is the choice of those who are in transition in life- either kids leaving home, new careers being sought, downsizing, going larger, moving to another state or country. It is the preference of lifestyles in transition to a new beginning, but it is temporary until the new color direction is found. Many are reclaiming control of their lives with a new sense of responsibility to the world while creating sacred isolated spaces for personal rejuvenation.
