20th Century Furniture Designers and Architects

Ted Boerner - American Designer

Ted Boerner grew up in rural Wisconsin, spending a great deal of time at his Grandfather's log cabin.

This later provided his modernist inspiration, as is was decorated wirh modern simplicity and Eames Chairs.

Starting his careeer as a dance and theatre student, he became acutley aware of the human form and how it moves and occupies space.

This was to prove useful later when he began designing.

He then studied theatre design and worked in classical theatre designing sets and costumes.

Tired of this by the mid 1980's Ted Boerner moved to San Francicso and began work as a designer, opening his furniture studio in 1988.

His skill and talent was quickly recognised creating custom furniture for the Governor Hotel in Portland and the Manhattan Hotel in Tokyo. Many of these designs are current today and still selling well due to their great design and craftmanship.

After a successful International Contemporary Furniture Fair in 1993, creating him great exposure and credit for his Crescent Bed, he has had high profile commercal clients such as Northwest Airlines, Conde Nast's Corporate offices, Nike and many more.

Boerner's furniture is now more accessible, as he has begun mass producing it, with strict overseeing, he manages to keep the handcrafted integrity of the pieces. Something very important to Boerner's philosophy, and making him part of furniture history today.
