20th Century Industrial Designer

Richard Sapper - German Designer

Richard Sapper was born in Munich, Germany in 1932, he studied philosophy, anatomy, graphic design and engineering, and later received a degree in business economics in 1956 from the University of Munich.

He is one of the few famous designers that has not attended a school of design or architecture.

Sapper does not like to describe his own work stating that the work should explain itself.

He worked for Mercedes Benz after completing his studies moving on to work with Gio Ponti in 1958 in Italy.

His clients include Alessi, Artemide, Castelli, Comforto, IBM, and Knoll International.

He has worked as a consultant for Fiat, Pirelli and IBM since 1980, where he is head of Product Design. He is most well known for his design of office furniture (including lamps) and chairs.

Products include:

Sheet metal chair Lambda for Gavina (1963)

The polyethylene child's seat K 1340 for Kartell (1964).

Experimental cars for FIAT and tire design for Pirelli from 1970 to 1976.

Artemide lamp, Tizio (1972)

'Melodic' kettle for Alessi (1983).

Richard Sapper's product designs have won him the Compasso d'Oro prize ten times as well as many other international design awards, making him a very well known sought after successful designer. His broad experience in industrial design and attention to innovative ideas has had a major impact in extremely technical sectors, such as cars, radios, televisions, and computers, a lot of us probably use his designs or innovations everyday without realising!
