20th Century Furniture Designers and Architects
Memphis Group
Memphis Group began in 1981 with Ettore Sotsass being attributed with its conception.
It was a manufacturing group which produced designs from many designers.
The archetypal Memphis image was the Casablanca sideboard/room divider produced by Sotsass in 1980.
Most pieces are brightly coloured, toy like with simple shapes like children's building blocks.
Memphis was the only major innovation to come out of the 1980's.
