Floor Coverings

Floor Coverings

The impact that floor coverings have on a room or a home can change the room instantly. Especially when refurbishing a home, the new floor coverings or finishes immediately enhance the look of the room. Changing floor coverings or finishes will alter the feeling or theme of a room immediately. For example think of a timber paneled room with a plush carpet. It is comfortable and has a natural warmth to it. Sound is readily absorbed into the soft finish of the carpet and its comfortable to walk on in bare feet and if there are children using the room then hands and knees are protected by the soft finish. However if the floor was in quarry tile or ceramic tile or even timber then the room’s function and feel has a much harder appearance to it. Looking at the great manor homes of Great Britain many would have timber paneling throughout however the entrance hall was very likely to be tile, stone or timber with the other areas of the home either carpeted or with rugs laid down to soften the space.

Modern homes can be similarly looked at with the the harder flooring used in utility spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms and hallways while the living and bedroom areas are very likely to have a softer finish. Of course with modern floor coverings the use of harder finishes can and are often used in the living areas and the use of area rugs are predominant. Even modern laminate flooring is laid on a soft underlay which makes it quite quiet to walk on and cushion backed vinyls have a similar effect.

The traditional tiles and timber flooring that are laid in buildings are still hard flooring and they have their own qualities that make them very desirable. However in all rooms it is what is appropriate for the function and the style of the interior that should be used. Wet area such as bathrooms and kitchens are better with an easily cleaned and impervious surface such as a floor tile or vinyl. Timbers can be used but they require sealing and are usually suited to Scandinavian or rustic styles.

We also use solid flooring such as concrete, colored, exposed aggregate, textured, stamped and  terrazzo. Listed here are many links to flooring companies and also within this text to the flooring sections of our websites.
