Colonial and Plantation Shutters for Window Treatments

See examples of how shutters have been used for functional purposes or purely decorative uses in the interior photographs. Sometimes shutters are used alone and other times they are combined with curtains.

Shutters are made from timber or wood and are usually painted or stained. There is a wonderful example below of an emerald green stained shutter. The photos below will provide you with some ideas for using colonial or plantation shutters as window treatments for your home decorating project.

Traditional or Colonial Shutters

Traditional or Colonial Shutters

Traditional or Colonial Shutters are used in conjunction with sheer casement curtains. Why? Purely for decorative purposes. The shutters provide texture to a simple room and the sheers are the functional curtain providing privacy.

These shutters are functioning, sometimes shutters are solely used for decoration and are fixed to the exterior wall.

The bold stained color of these colonial or traditional shutters is a feature of this room.

The emerald green acts as a frame to the beautiful garden view outside.

Plantation Shutters for a Modern Look

Plantation Shutters for a Modern Look

These Plantation Shutters are painted the same color as the wall to try and create a solid wall so the room appears larger than it is, yet when tilted the louvers will allow air flow into the room and reduce glare from outside providing a functional use as well as aesthetic.

If a curtain was used like on the left hand side then it would break up the wall and enclose the space.

So a very good use of the plantation shutter.

Plantation Shutter

Plantation Shutter

I must admit that this is the smallest example of a plantation shutter I have seen.

In this bedroom it has been used so that air flow can be allowed into the room at night and as the window is reasonably high it is safer to leave open this window at night than the larger windows facing the street.

Solid Panel Timber Shutters

Solid Panel Timber Shutters

These solid panel timber shutters are used for totally closing off the window. The air or light cannot come through like a plantation or colonial shutter.

In this application as a restaurant shutter, they provide decoration and let in the natural light during the day and for the evening, they create complete privacy to the room and as they are the same color as the wall, they don’t distract from the light and airy white open space, they just provide a little texture from their molded panels.
